No silver bullet

I’m currently reading The Future: More Than 80 Key Trends for South Africa, by the local trend guru Dion Chang and his collaborators Bronwyn Williams and Faeeza Khan. Concise, fresh and on point.

Under the Technology pillar, the #HustleChatGPT chapter piqued my interest. It speaks to how the proliferation of AI tools can help would-be entrepreneurs get a business off the ground. Need a website? A corporate identity? A slick social media presence? Automating the mundane? AI has you covered.

Does it present a plethora of benefits that were previously costly, time and resource-intensive and in some cases, largely inaccessible? Absolutely. With a capital A.

But as with all things, there are limitations. There are three things that I believe AI will never replace. Not in my lifetime, anyway.

#1 Relationships. The most advanced large language models and machine learning will never replace human interactions and connections. Never.

#2 Creativity, which is defined as “the use of imagination or original ideas to create something”. Case closed.

#3 Human ingenuity. Being contextually original and inventive is what makes us human. And unique.

Some might think I’m an “AI hater”. I’m not. I just enjoy using my God-given talent to think for myself. To dissect and interrogate. To be creative.

P.S. This book is a must-read and highly recommended.
